The Hepplewhite sideboard would have been used to store silver ware, dinnerware and other dining accoutrements. Modern Sideboards can be used in exactly the same way as the grand Hepplewhite and Chippendale (he also got in on the act) pieces. In the years from 1770, no dining room would have been considered complete without Sideboards. We may not have the grand dining style of the Hepplewhite and Chippendale era, but there is absolutely no reason why we shouldnt have one in modern homes today. We have all seen some period dramas where a group of people are sitting in a grand dining room at a heavily laden table being served food from the sideboard. Whilst we may not have the servants or the grand dining rooms of yesteryears, we do still dine and need storage space for our cutlery and china.
The size of the sideboard is an important consideration. Do not get a large sideboard if you do not have enough space in the house for it. You should find a sideboard that is not too big or too small. Getting the right sized sideboard will not make your room look too spacious or too crowded. There are some sideboards which are long and slender while there are others which are short and broad. Get the sideboard which will add to your rooms aesthetic value. Many furniture stores sell different kinds of sideboards at different prices.
Solid oak is still treasured by woodworkers and furniture buyers alike. Throughout the ages, it has been valued for its strength and beauty, which is why servers made of oak are still popular today. In contrast to oak veneer, solid oak will tend to have a more substantial feel to it if a lighter wood has been used with the veneer. Some of the more exotic or flamboyant looking grains may be more readily available in veneers, however, as they are hard to get and veneering allows a relatively small amount of wood to be usable for visual effects.
An oak sideboard can come in any number of model types or shapes. Usually they are long and are meant to be put against the wall as to not obstruct comings and goings. Sideboards are often used to hold items that are used often, or just decorations. Many have whole cabinets inside, while some simply feature a couple of drawers. What is most interesting about sideboards is that they can have long or short legs, cabinets or drawers, a mirror or tiered table top - there is no real limit on the varieties that there are available. Every manufacturer either focuses on more elaborate or simplistic types, so checking all of your resources is recommended.
