Viola Dillon. Sideboards. February 13th , 2018.
Sideboards were revolutionary in the décor of a dining room. With its elegant simplicity and dynamic appearance, sideboards bring in an air of sophistication into your dining area. Its tasteful, yet practical presence still makes it a favored choice for people who are looking to add in some character to their dining room. Standing a little higher than a dining table, sideboards typically have a flat display top surface supported by a base that can come with options like cabinets, shelves, draws or wine racks. Do Sideboards Make Sense? Sideboards are one of the most useful furnishings you can invest in, and for good reason!
One popular style that can be considered an antique, but can also suit modern tastes, is that of the mission oak sideboard. Mission furniture was mostly made with white oak that was stained with ammonia fumes, and this plus the craftsman designs yielded a product with sensible lines and an elegant look. These are dark without being too dark, and can potentially be used both for rooms that look more serious as well as ones which are more casual. This is one design where solid oak was the rule, though it may take a bit of searching to find mission sideboards for which this is still true.
But why specifically an oak sideboard? As stated above, oak is a notoriously durable type of wood. Not only that, but it is nowhere near as expensive as something like cherry would be, making it the perfect choice for someone looking for a long-lasting piece of furniture at a reasonable cost. It is possible to find them at either furniture-dedicated stores or in some large general department stores. The higher quality products will naturally be found at the furniture stores, while more affordable and simplistic styles will be located at department stores. It is also possible to find them online.
Since contemporary dining rooms typically have a clean, modern and sort of minimalistic look, sideboards are not seen often in modern homes. They remain a standard feature of traditional dining rooms as they emphasise the overall traditional style and give the dining area a touch of warmth which in turn creates a unique atmosphere. But in the recent years, sideboards are getting increasingly sought after for contemporary dining rooms as well. Renewed interest in sideboards can partly be explained with the change in dining room furniture trends which put a greater emphasis on functionality. Minimalistic style that used to be popular only until recently is ideal for smaller dining rooms because it helps save space, creates an illusion of larger space than it really is and is easily combined with modern furniture. However, many home owners have also discovered that it can be very impractical and sort of cold. This may not be as noticeable in small-sized dining rooms which have little space for anything other than a table and a few chairs but it is obvious in generous-sized rooms as it can create an appearance of emptiness and make the room look kind of incomplete.
The Hepplewhite sideboard would have been used to store silver ware, dinnerware and other dining accoutrements. Modern Sideboards can be used in exactly the same way as the grand Hepplewhite and Chippendale (he also got in on the act) pieces. In the years from 1770, no dining room would have been considered complete without Sideboards. We may not have the grand dining style of the Hepplewhite and Chippendale era, but there is absolutely no reason why we shouldnt have one in modern homes today. We have all seen some period dramas where a group of people are sitting in a grand dining room at a heavily laden table being served food from the sideboard. Whilst we may not have the servants or the grand dining rooms of yesteryears, we do still dine and need storage space for our cutlery and china.
