The sideboard is an often overlooked piece of furniture, but it can be the perfect accent to just about any room in your home. An oak sideboard is the preferred choice because the wood itself is durable, while not too expensive. Furniture made of this type of wood is known to last decades, while still retaining its classic look and feel. A sideboard is essentially a piece of cabinetry-slash-shelving-slash-table that goes on the side of a room. While not a prominent piece that sticks out and demands you or your guests attention, it is just as elegant and room-making as any other type of furniture is expected to be - sometimes even more so. it is a good idea to shop around as much as possible to find out what you really need or are truly looking for.
The Hepplewhite sideboard would have been used to store silver ware, dinnerware and other dining accoutrements. Modern Sideboards can be used in exactly the same way as the grand Hepplewhite and Chippendale (he also got in on the act) pieces. In the years from 1770, no dining room would have been considered complete without Sideboards. We may not have the grand dining style of the Hepplewhite and Chippendale era, but there is absolutely no reason why we shouldnt have one in modern homes today. We have all seen some period dramas where a group of people are sitting in a grand dining room at a heavily laden table being served food from the sideboard. Whilst we may not have the servants or the grand dining rooms of yesteryears, we do still dine and need storage space for our cutlery and china.
Sideboards and dressers are incredibly practical pieces of furniture, allowing you to store plates, glasses, cutlery and other tableware in your dining room, leaving your kitchen cupboards free for other things. Weve put together some hints and tips to help you to choose the perfect sideboard or dresser for your dining room. Measure up before shopping Before you start searching for your new furniture, decide where you would like to put it and measure up to see how much space you have available. Remember to make sure that you will have enough room to open the cupboards or drawers. If you are buying a wooden dresser or sideboard, make sure that you dont place it in direct sunlight, as this can cause fading, or next to a direct heat source, such as a fire or a radiator.
Oak sideboards, if you say the words quickly they mean very little but the reality of such an item of furniture is it can be invaluable in your dining space. Storage is at a premium in dining spaces and rooms, as we tend not to have a lot of furniture other than the table and chairs. However, good-sized oak sideboards can give you all of the storage space you need for your dining cutlery, dishes, candles, dining linens and any other items you use whilst entertaining. You not only have the storage inside the sideboard but space on top to put a music system, your iPod docking station or even a TV and DVD player.
Roll Desk Styles Some contemporary console tables come with a roll desk style, a charming way to hide bills, mail and other paperwork during a dinner or cocktail party. Everybody needs an unloading zone, but its not like you want a landfill of papers sitting in your hallway. Contemporary sideboards with roll desk styles let you hide the mess elegantly. Mirrors Mirrors are also a nice complimentary feature for modern sideboards. This can be especially handy in bedrooms or foyers. Mirrors can contribute an feeling of open space to a room. Contemporary sideboards with mirrors work well next to the front door, as you can double check your hair or makeup as you walk out of the house.
